  • Managing Transition - from Cleanup to Closure   10/28/2005
“…The LEHR Transition Team conducted Readiness Review with more than 15 people in DOE/Contractor offices across the country in less than 5 hours — comparable to one flight between Washington and San Francisco.” Find out more about Closure Activities at the Laboratory for Energy-related Health Research.  [view site]

  • eASER ASER Streamling Pilot at LEHR   10/26/2004
LandTrek demonstrated a streamlined approach to facilitate review, revisions, and commenting for the Annual Site Environmental Report for DOE at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory ASER Workshop, October 26, 2004. This approach is consistent with DOE current requirements including DOE Orders 231.1A and 450.1 and will serve as a pilot for possible use by other DOE sites.

The current process of developing and reviewing data for inclusion into the LEHR data will not change. The focus of the technical approach is to develop a streamlined method to reduce the actual production costs associated with creating, reviewing, editing and publishing the ASER for individual DOE sites. The suggested approach should result in a faster, cheaper and more user-friendly method for revising the ASER documents at LEHR and other DOE sites. This approach allows access by any user with Internet access and eliminates the repetition of unchanged information. This system should reduce the demand for hard copies of ASER documents resulting in reduced cost and schedule acceleration for the preparation and update of DOE facility ASERs. The pilot application will be used at the Laboratory for Energy-related Health Research (LEHR) for the 2004 ASER.  [view site]

  • LEHR 2002-2003 ASERs are now online   8/20/2004
The LEHR Annual Site Environmental Report is now available online. LandTrek will be working on an innovative Streamlined Annual Site Envirnonmental Report for LEHR to be presented at the LEHR Workshop in October 2004. Please check back for future updates.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: This Annual Site Environmental Report for the Laboratory for Energy-Related Health Research (LEHR) (the Site) at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) summarizes the United States Department of Energy (DOE), National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA’s) environmental performance at the Site in 2003, including environmental compliance; environmental monitoring data for air, soil, ground water, surface water, storm water and ambient radiation; and environmental management programs. DOE operation of LEHR as a research facility ceased in 1989 after three decades of research on the health effects of low-level radiation exposure (primarily strontium-90 and radium-226) on human health using beagle dogs as research subjects. Contamination from prior site use, including research activities, resulted in the addition of the Site to the National Priorities List in 1994. In 1997, DOE and UC Davis reached an agreement on the responsibilities for site clean up. During Calendar Year 2003, DOE/NNSA continued activities at the Site in accordance with the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) requirements.  [view site]

  • CERCLA Closure Guidance   5/27/2004
The CERCLA Remedial Action Site Closure Guidance is now available online. The purpose of this Guide is to assist you in successfully completing the CERCLA requirements applicable to the closure of remedial action sites. The CERCLA closure process for remedial actions can take different directions depending upon the outcome of the cleanup. This Guide simplifies this process and provides you with all of the references and associated links to key documents you will need to successfully meet these requirements regardless of the cleanup outcome.  [view site]

  • Sharing Information Between EPA and DOE   2/17/2004
In Spring 2004, LandTrek will partner with EPA to share monitoring and land use/institutional controls information. One of the goals of this collaboration between EPA and DOE is to ensure that future development and land use planning will incorporate all pertinent information about restrictions from legacy operations. EPA and DOE will gain access to a more accurate collection of data for environmental conditions and land use restrictions for a given geographic area around the DOE sites. Data will also be stored within the EPA IC system for analysis across all federal environmental IC sites.  [view site]

  • Uncertainty Analysis of Land Use Controls at Mound   11/20/2003
LandTrek has assisted Mound finalize its "Uncertainty Analysis of Land Use Controls at the Mound Plant" and published it to the Mound page. A key concern of stakeholders, including the public, regulators, and DOE, identified during the Mound Site Assessment of Post-Closure Data Needs (April 2002) is how DOE will ensure continued protection of human health and the environment following transfer, particularly in terms of maintaining effectiveness of land use controls in the long term. To address this concern, and to more effectively plan how to manage the potential impacts of the uncertainties associated with long-term controls at the Mound Plant, DOE-Mound Environmental Management Project (DOE-MCP) decided to conduct an uncertainty analysis, sponsored in part by LandTrek. The purpose of this report is to document the analysis that was conducted, the uncertainties that were identified, and the resulting prioritization of those uncertainties so that DOE-MCP may effectively plan how to manage the site in the long-term.  [view site]

  • LandTrek documents RBES Vision at LEHR and SLAC   10/28/2003
In accordance with DOE Policy 455.1, the Office of Environmental Management (EM) requested DOE sites to submit a site-specific Risk-Based End State (RBES) vision document. LandTrek has assisted compliance with this request by documenting the RBES vision at the Laboratory for Energy-Related Health Research (LEHR) and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC).  [view site]

  • Mapping Land Use and Institutional Controls at BNL   4/12/2003
The purpose of this website is to provide centralized, integrated access to information pertaining to Brookhaven National Laboratory remediation areas that are subject to land use and institutional controls. It includes brief information on each of the BNL contaminated sites and facilities, their cleanup status, contaminants or concern, and maps depicting land use and land use restrictions. It defines the scope of activities intended within each contaminated area, so that stewards and stakeholders have a clear understanding of restrictions and stewardship responsibilities. This website replaces what was informally referred to at BNL as the "soil contamination map".  [view site]
